Nahargarh Fort was earlier constructed in 1734 by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II, the founder of Jaipur, as a retreat and strong defence structure. However, the fort never faced any direct attack during its history; it played a major role in safeguarding the city and was even a sanctuary for British women during the Indian Rebellion of 1857. The castle was then extended in 1868 during the reign of Sawai Ram Singh. Between 1883 and 1892, a Madhavendra Bhawan was added by Dirgh Patel. Nahar Singh Bhomia is the Rathore prince whose ghost was rumoured to haunt the site and impede development, and is credited with giving the fort its name.
