History

Constructed in the year 1921 and ending in 1931, India Gate, also called the All India War Memorial, was built to pay tribute to the soldiers who lost their lives during World War I and the 3rd Anglo-Afghan War. Around 84,000 soldiers of the British Indian Army lost their lives during the war, but only 13,516 fallen soldiers’ names have been inscribed on the surface of this 42-meter-high arch, which was designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens and matches the Arc de Triomphe in Paris.

Following the Indo-Pakistan War in 1971, the eternal Flame was added to the base of the arch, naming it Amar Jawan Jyoti (Flame of the Immortal Soldier) to honour the lives of soldiers who died in the War, creating a national significance to respect the brave soldiers. Speaking of the architectural marvel, the design resembles the French Arc de Triomphe, where it uses red Bharatpur stone, and the arch showcases the inscriptions craved on it, including the dates 1914 and 1919 and the word “India” decades, national leaders and dignitaries have been paying their respects on special occasions like Republic Day and Independence Day. Amar Jawan Jyoti was ceremonially merged with a new National War Memorial that was inaugurated in 2019 near India Gate.
